J.W. Oliver of the Wayne County FFA Chapter in Jesup, Georgia, grows 27 acres of two breeds of watermelon. Beginning in the ninth grade with three acres, he worked with his father, exchanging labor for equipment, land and other resources. He learned to identify and control common watermelon pests, including rindworms, leaf spot and fruit blotch. Oliver is supported by his parents Lora and Wayne and FFA advisor Michael Kirkland.
